Open & Affirming Church

JENSEN BEACH COMMUNITY CHURCH

UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST

ABOUT US

FIRST, WE WANT TO SAY THANKS FOR CHECKING US OUT. WE'RE PRETTY EXCITED ABOUT WHAT GOD IS DOING AT OUR CHURCH AND WE'RE GLAD TO HAVE THE CHANCE TO SHARE THAT WITH YOU.

OUR HISTORY

Our Sunday school was established in 1894. It is from this organization that Jensen Beach Community Church grew. At that time, the Sunday school met at the Al Frisco Hotel on the corner of Commercial Street (now Jensen Beach Blvd) and Indian River Drive.

After several moves from the hotel to Town Hall to a small church built on Church Street, the final site for the church was built at its current location on Skyline Drive in 1960. Construction of the Bell Tower, Fellowship Hall, and the Education Building was completed in 1962. The first service in Fellowship Hall was held on December 2, 1962. The Sanctuary was completed in 1965.

In 1973 the doors to the Jensen Beach Community Church Preschool opened. It was the first church related child care center in the area. In 1980, Jensen Beach Community Church became affiliated with the United Church of Christ. In 1987 the Jensen Beach Community Church sponsored the Cub Scouts Pack 814. The Pack is still sponsored by the church and the program has expanded to several dens.

Jensen Beach Community Church has been a proud partner of recovery groups including Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous and Alanon for over twenty years.

OUR MISSIONS

Bible Study is held Wednesday evenings from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm. No prior experience is necessary and all are welcome!

We have a rich and diverse musical program here at JBCC. The traditional Hand Bell Choir and Chancel Choir are led by our talented Music Director, Earl Little. The Praise Band leads a contemporary worship service once a month. The practice schedules for these groups are listed on the Events page.

Children and Youth Ministries provides our young people with fun, yet meaningful, opportunities during the year including missionary work, volunteer support and great times with great friends. Check out the Events page for upcoming events.

Sunday School (Pre-K to 5th grade) is from 10:20 am to 11:00 am Sunday mornings.

Coffee Hour is from 11:00 am to noon on Sundays immediately following service in Fellowship Hall.

OPEN AND AFFIRMING

In Matthew, Jesus tells the Pharisees to love the Lord your God and to love your neighbor as yourself. Your neighbors include the economically disadvantaged, those with different education, the differently abled, the young and the old, all sexual orientations, various gender identities and methods of gender expression, those with different theological perspectives, multiple ethnicities, colors and races or any other condition that tends to separate us.

In 1985, the General Synod adopted the resolution “Calling on United Church of Christ Congregations to Declare Themselves Open and Affirming.” In 2007, the Florida Conference adopted a resolution calling upon the conference to encourage and promote an understanding of the ONA process through educational efforts. In 2010, the Florida Conference adopted an Open and Affirming Resolution. As a covenental agreement, we declare ourselves to be Open and Affirming and to accept all into the full life and ministry of Jensen Beach Community Church, United Church of Christ. On March 6, 2011, Jensen Beach Community Church voted yes on becoming an Open and Affirming Church.

WHO IS UCC

The United Church of Christ (UCC) is a distinct and diverse community of Christians that come together as one church to join faith and action.  With over 5,000 churches and nearly one million members across the U.S., the UCC serves God in the co-creation of a just and sustainable world.  The UCC is a church of firsts, a church of extravagant welcome, and a church where "…they may all be one" (John 17:21).

The Church of Firsts

Since 1957, the United Church of Christ has been the church of firsts, weaving God’s message of hope and extravagant welcome with action for justice and peace. Together, we live out our faith in ways that effect change in our communities.  The UCC's many "firsts" mean that we have inherited a tradition of acting upon the demands of our faith.  When we read in Galatians: "There is no longer Jew or Greek, there is no longer slave or free, there is no longer male and female; for all of you are one in Christ Jesus"—a demand is made upon us. And so we were the first historically white denomination to ordain an African-American, the first to ordain a woman, the first to ordain an openly gay man, and the first Christian church to affirm the right of same-gender couples to marry. We were in the forefront of the anti-slavery movement and the Civil Rights movement.  Our response to the demands of our faith is woven into the history of our country.

A Church of Extravagant Welcome

Today, we continue to change lives throughout the world. We work alongside more than 200 mission partners. We labor ceaselessly to fight injustice, in the United States and abroad. We instill our vision into our youth and young adults, forging leaders who will imagine new dreams. And we sustain and develop church leaders, pastors, and our local churches to live their faith in exciting new ways.  We believe in a God that is still speaking, a God that is all-loving and inclusive.  We are a church that welcomes and accepts everyone as they are, where your mind is nourished as much as your soul.

We are a church where Jesus the healer meets Jesus the revolutionary, and where together, we grow a just and peaceful world.
